The two men were the most popular superstars of their generation, two of the company's best in-ring performers and had fantastic in-ring chemistry together, which led to some amazing confrontations. Amongst their most well-known meetings were a trilogy of matches at WrestleMania and an excellent match at Backlash 1999. However, in 2001, the two men produced something of a lost treasure, especially to American viewers, on a UK-only pay-per-view. The backdrop to Rebellion 2001 was the WWE vs. WCW/ECW Alliance storyline, with Stone Cold Steve Austin having jumped ship from WWE to fight on the side of the Alliance. In front of 15,000 fans at the Manchester Evening News Arena, the two put on a 22-minute exhibition for Austin's WWE Championship. In the end, Stone Cold Steve Austin retained his title after interference from fellow Alliance member, Kurt Angle.
