WWE: 5 Worst World Champions During The Brand Extension

1. Jack Swagger

jack swagger It doesn't usually work when the WWE take a midcard talent and suddenly put the title on him. It was no different when Jack Swagger won the World Heavyweight Championship in March 2010. At the time, he wasn't even really that over as a midcarder, never mind as a World champion. He went from being in the Money in the Bank match at WrestleMania XVI, seemingly to make up the numbers, to World Heavyweight Champion in a matter of days. The very sight of him winning the Money in the Bank match was a 'WTF?' moment in itself, never mind what followed on the next edition of Smackdown which aired five days later. You thought after he did win the briefcase that they'd give him a push, start booking him strong and build up towards cashing in the briefcase and putting the title on him. You thought it would probably be about six months down the line. But no, it was done straight away and the WWE expected fans to take this guy seriously as the World champion despite not even being that successful on the mid-card. A run as ECW champion prior to this still wasn't enough to convince that this goofy character was World title material. Fair enough, he developed a more serious styreak whilst champion, but I for one couldn't take him seriously. It was no surprise that he then dropped the belt to Rey Mysterio at the June 'Fatal-4-Way' pay-per-view. He quickly dropped back down to competing for the mid-card Intercontinental and United States titles and it says it all that he didn't even have a match at the following WrestleMania (XXVII) in 2011, appearing only in Michael Cole's corner his his match against Jerry 'The King' Lawler. He'd have another main event push under a new "Real American" gimmick which culminated in a failed attempt to win back the World Heavyweight Championship (from Alberto Del Rio) at WrestleMania 29 last year, and he quickly returned to the mid-card once again.
