Modern day ladder match competitors are now in the hunt of innovative ways to use ladders, because they want to stand out and don't want to rehash old spots from previous matches. As such, ladder spots are becoming increasingly elaborate, and the amount of ladders and size of ladders incorporated in each match is increasing. A lot of modern day ladder matches tend to have action that's overblown and contrived, meaning that audiences are forced to suspend their belief. The ladders are sometimes set up in ways that don't make sense in terms of someone trying to win the match, and you can see the spot coming a mile away. In Shawn & Razor's match, they'd simple throw the ladder across each other's backs, or hit each other in the face with it. It might sound a bit simplistic, but it's basically what two men in a fight would do with a ladder. It made the match seem more realistic and genuinely competitive. The art of wrestling is looking like you're fighting when you're actually working together. Razor & Shawn got that balance exactly right.
