You could consider it either a luxury or a curse, but being the first (televised) ladder match in history meant that Shawn & Razor's performances would be the measuring stick against which all subsequent ladder matches to come. They've been living in its shadow ever since. There have been many ladder matches in the last 20 years, but none have matched the quality, impact and legacy of Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon. This match also set the bar for matches at Wrestlemania too. Up until Wrestlemania 10 there had been very few gimmick matches, with Hulk Hogan & King Kong Bundy's steel cage match being the only notable one in the previous 9 Wrestlemanias. Post-ladder match, the number of match styles at Wrestlemania increased because of their popularity, and because they afford wrestlers the opportunity to demonstrate their talent in a way that traditional singles matches can't. Now it's unusual to have a Wrestlemania without some form of gimmick match, and we have Shawn Michaels & Razor Ramon to thank for it.
