WWE: 9 Story Lines In Early 1999 That Sucked

9. The Entire 1999 Royal Rumble Match

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKh6GxstjOw Leading into the 1999 Royal Rumble, the whole storyline of the Rumble revolved around Steve Austin trying to get the WWF Title back from Vince McMahon's Corporation. It was a road filled with double-crosses and money speaking louder than words. Eventually, Austin got himself in the Rumble, but of course he was entered as the #1 entrant. Vince put himself in the Rumble match to get the job done himself, but Commissioner Shawn Michaels made McMahon the #2 entrant. The first couple minutes of the match was what the fans wanted. Austin beat up Vince and was looking ready to throw him out, but Vince bailed and ran. Austin gave chase all the way to a bathroom where the Corporation was waiting and beat up Austin. All the while, the Rumble match was going on. Some of the early entrants were Golga, Droz, young rookie Edge, Gillberg, Steve Blackman, Dan Severn, Tiger Ali Singh, The Blue Meanie, Gangrel and Kurrgan. Eventually Vince returned to do commentary halfway through the match, but no one cared. Some of the characters were over, but minus Mabel's appearance and abduction by the Ministry of Darkness, nothing of note happened. No storylines were progressed and the announcers kept talking about Vince and Austin. The second half of the Rumble picked up with bigger names, but against the focus was all Austin and when he came back, the crowd reacted. Of course with Vince still there, it was obvious what it would come down to. When everyone else was eliminated, Austin got McMahon back in the ring, but due to a distraction from the Rock, Vince eliminated Austin and won the Rumble match. Rock could have at least helped pull Austin over the top rope, but no, Austin was physically thrown out by Vince. Of course this was rendered even more irrelevant when Vince gave up his Wrestlemania title shot and it reverted back to Austin anyway. Why not just have Austin and McMahon come out late and don't overshadow the other wrestlers? Why even have Vince win it if he gives it up the next night?
