Anyone who knows this writer or has read his gushing appraisals of WCW (whilst acknowledging the worst that company hurled up too - balance is important) for years will know he's a Bill Goldberg mark. In fact, big Billy's name has passed this guy's lips more than it has Bret Hart's, and that takes some doing considering the 'Hitman' never misses a chance to lambast Goldberg.

Being excited for retro Goldberg is one thing, but believing he should be right in the mix as a featured WWE star in 2025 is another entirely. Eyes aplenty rolled around skulls when Bill teased something with in-ring machine Gunther back at Bad Blood in October 2024. Nothing has changed on that front. Pushing Goldberg to the forefront of the upper card would still be a tough sell for Triple H and his writers.

Sadly, there's every chance the former squash match mauler makes an impact at Backlash by helping Pat McAfee just when things look seriously dire for the announcer. Unsurprisingly, Michael Cole would've bounced off Gunther like a fly. Then, out of nowhere faster than a Randy Orton finish, here comes Goldberg to even the score and stand up to the 'Ring General's' bullying ways.

Oh, oh no.

Listen, if Hunter thinks he has to stick Gunther vs. Goldberg on a show over in Saudi Arabia to appease paymasters then so be it, but getting there via Gunther losing to Pat McAfee would stink to high heavens. Gunther's character is developing nicely and becoming more than a mere grappling android, but this is a sensitive period of his WWE career after back to back 'Mania losses.

The last thing he needs is to be speared out of his trunks by Goldberg before losing to a commentator.
