WWE Battleground 2016: 10 Things You Probably Missed

7. Awkward Timing Between Maryse & Bob Backlund

Bob Backlund's character almost calls out for awkwardness. Watch WWE programming with any non-fan, and they'll quite rightly wonder who the rambling old man is, stumbling around and tearing his shirt off in a fit of rage. At Battleground, Backlund was at ringside for Darren Young's WWE Intercontinental Title bout against The Miz.

Joining him was Maryse, and the pair would engage in a little spot that anchored the conclusion of the title match. Unwilling to let Miz just leave the ring, he was then slapped by the man's wife. It wasn't a major issue, but Backlund clearly paused to wait on the strike, before bumping hard on his back.

Then, he fired up and decided to throw a tantrum. In a strange moment, Maryse fell over nothing in particular (she didn't even graze those ring steps) and fell from her feet. The insinuation was supposed to be that Backlund had slapped her back, presumably to anger The Miz.

The only problem was the timing, Miz was looking right at Maryse when she fell to the ground. Heels can get away with this kind of thing, but it was undeniably weird.
