WWE Black Wednesday Releases 2020 - Where Are They Now? (One Year Later)

11. Drake Maverick

Drake Maverick
WWE

We all felt gutted for Drake Maverick when he issued a teary-eyed video on how devastated he was to be cut from WWE... but was he ever really cut? We still don't know the true answer today.

WWE immediately turned Maverick's "release" into a television angle. Told to fight for his job in the Cruiserweight Title tournament, Drake came up short, but was still given a contract anyway. Handed a new deal by Triple H at the top of the ramp, the angle felt as artificial as any segment involving black goop and Randy Orton's mouth.

If the company did play on people's emotions at a time when dozens of their former employees and independent contractors were suffering after being let go, that's gross. Characteristically so. A company like WWE probably doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt in situations like this.

Maverick is still on the NXT roster, teaming with Killian Dain.
