The WWE Changed The Debate

For a company that for a while was so savvy to what the WWE were doing, the WCW were not able to really capitalise on the Montreal Screwjob in any sort of way that would drive the notion home that Vince McMahon was a selfish, egotistical S.O.B.- despite the fact that they now had the chief victim on their payroll. Instead they decided to focus on the feuds that were taking them to Starrcade in a month's time. While this was going on however, the WWE had made hay with the idea of Vince McMahon being despised by the fans and began to use it more and more in their feuds as they noticed that the idea of an authoritarian heel was something that could be used to get babyfaces over with the crowd. By embracing pubic perceptions of him (though if you listen to Jim Cornette, this took a little time to get through), McMahon was able to make lemonade out of some pretty big lemons and in turn helped usher in the most productive era in the WWE's history.
