WWE put themselves in a tough place by shoving Dean Ambrose into a feud with Chris Jericho. Following his loss to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, Ambrose badly needed a win to regain some momentum. That came at Payback against Y2J, meaning there was no real need for a rematch. The babyface had won, revenge was a non-factor.

That didn't stop the company from continuing the rivalry, even creating the idea of the Asylum Match for both guys to work at Extreme Rules. At times, the caged affair was dismal, almost entering the realm of wrestling comedy when 'weapons' such as a mop were used.

Picking up closer to the end of the match, Jericho was clearly doing everything he could to make Ambrose look like a star. This was evident when he agreed to take a painful bump on the thumbtacks his peer had introduced to the bout.

Both will move on from their program, and Jericho can look back on the whole feud fondly. He was incredibly unselfish throughout, playing his veteran role to perfection.
