As Payback faded to black, fans were left with the knowledge that Roman Reigns and AJ Styles would collide again at Extreme Rules for the WWE World Heavyweight Title. On that pay-per-view, the conclusion pretty much told fans who was Roman's next major obstacle, that man being his former Shield running buddy Seth Rollins.

Sprinting out and nailing Reigns with a Pedigree, Rollins looked like he hadn't missed a step. Out since early-November with a serious injury, the point that he was forced to vacate the title (instead of properly losing it) is crucial to the story going forward.

Setting the scene for forthcoming pay-per-view events is something WWE used to do regularly. Nowadays, they have decided to wait until the following evening's Monday Night Raw show to do so, a formula which has grown undoubtedly stale.

By having Rollins make a shocking appearance at Extreme Rules, WWE provided a talking point going into Raw, rather than waiting to trigger his return there. That was satisfying, and gave Extreme Rules that killer moment every pay-per-view requires.
