WWE Extreme Rules: 5 Greatest Ever Matches

1. Alberto Del Rio Vs. Christian - Ladder Match

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVwkOgJ76kU Now this one is a bit of a sentimental favorite for me and it may be causing quite a few of you to go "Huh?" so hang in there. The number one thing lacking in the PG era of modern WWE is storytelling. Storytelling has always been the heart of professional wrestling and this is something that seems to be missing nowadays. This match could not have unfolded in a more perfect way. We were all heartbroken to see Edge retire. The man had given us as fans so much and we hoped upon hope that he still had so much more to give but at the end of the day his body just couldn't do it anymore. When Edge vacated the title it left an open spot in the World Heavyweight Championship match at Extreme Rules. Enter Christian the once "brother" of Edge who was now billed as his "best friend" (yea we noticed you guys tried to pull that one on us) who found himself in the right spot at the right time. Christian had always had what it took to be a big player in WWE and in 2005 was arguably the best heel in the company. If you don't believe me go back and watch his Wrestlemania 20 match with Chris Jericho. It's some great heel work right there. After getting frustrated with lack of attention from WWE creative Christian made the jump to TNA and became the biggest fish in a much smaller pond. Christian's run as "The Instant Classic Christian Cage" in TNA is some of the best work of his career and he finally proved that he could carry a brand on his shoulders. A few years passed and with main event experience under his belt Christian decided to make his way back to WWE for another shot. We all assumed he would be immediately paired with Edge. With Edge being a bonafide superstar now and Christian showing that he has everything it takes to do the same thing it made perfect sense. I'm not sure if they thought it was a good idea or if they were trying to punish Christian but they brought him back and stuck him on the C show in the form of their ECW brand and it was months before Edge and Christian ever came face to face. Regardless Christian sucked it up became ECW champion and made an otherwise lackluster show worth watching. He slowly worked his way up the WWE ladder once again and seemed like a sure pick for money in the bank but was passed over year after year. In the months leading up to Wrestlemania 27 the WWE slowly seemed to be building toward a Edge Vs. Christian feud which is something we had all been dying for. Unfortunately it never happened but something great still happened even though it wasn't what we all hoped for. Finally at Extreme Rules Christian was getting his chance to show the world that he belonged in the main event. You could tell just by looking at his face as he made his entrance that it was his time and he was going to seize this opportunity. Alberto Del Rio had been shoved down our throats for months and no one was really buying it. Although at first he seemed pretty reluctant to take bumps this match gave Del Rio some much needed credibility. Del Rio was "soft" so to speak and seemed unwilling to pull out all the stops, so to see him go extreme helped up his stock with the WWE fanbase. Admittedly the bumps in this match aren't on the same level as the Jeff Hardy Vs. Edge match but this bout had people on the edge of their seats for an entirely different reason. Everyone watching hung on every move wondering "will he do it? will Christian finally win the big one?" which made for one of the most interesting ladder matches ever. It's rare to see someone win their first world title nowadays without the assistance of money in the bank and even more rare to see a much deserved WWE veteran get something they worked so hard for. When Christian finally climbed to the top of the ladder and unhooked the World Heavyweight Championship the crowd went wild. This was the feel good moment that had not been seen in WWE in a very long time. This is something that was much needed in WWE after a very lackluster Wrestlemania 27 it gave us fans something to be thankful for. We finally got to see someone we wanted to win the World Heavyweight Championship win it. It wasn't the guy WWE told us to like it was the guy we had stuck with for well over a decade and always hoped would win the big one and he finally did and although Christian's World Heavyweight Championship run was cut short by another questionable decision on behalf of WWE creative, no one can ever take this moment away from us. This is my list! Let me know what you think and give some examples of matches you might have included in there!
