No Mercy, some controversy?

There's no real explanation for the name 'No Mercy', unless it was coined in reference to those poor fans in the UK who had to suffer through Tiger Ali Singh vs. Gillberg way back in 1999. It could be an oblique nod to Dan Spivey's non-involvement, but that seems irrelevant.

Last year, his budget replica Bray Wyatt headlined SmackDown's exclusive edition. Thankfully, No Mercy 2017 has a much more appealing main event. In fact, it has two. Neither of them involve the 'Eater of Worlds'.

You can't please some fans though. For all the constant crowing that WWE only seem to care when it comes to WrestleMania season, the moment the company offer two truly intriguing meetings for a 'B-Level' event, those same whinging voices pipe up to complain that it's 'wasteful'. They ought to give their heads a shake.

It's a mini autumn WrestleMania, and we should be grateful. The consequential nature of the main event contests makes them enticing, but unpredictable. With John Cena and Brock Lesnar facing their sternest tests in ages, could this be the start of the long goodbye for the Class of 2002?

8. Elias Succeeds In His Night At The Apollo

A bit of a philosophical clash, this one, as the unsigned starving artist puts his ethics on the line against a major global brand looking to screw him under the thumb. Well, sort of.

If only Apollo Crews' and Elias' (né Sampson) clash had even that degree of homespun drama. Rather, it's the throwaway pre-show match of the month, a position which does neither guy any favours unless they happen to have stocks in a popular fried chicken emporium. Unfortunately for the two, these preliminary feuds tend to stretch out for several weeks, and as this is their first PPV outing, we can reasonably expect the designated heel to emerge the victor. Plucking is part of Elias' repertoire, which makes him the perfect winner for this glorified advert.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
