WWE Backlash 2004 was a superior offering from the Raw brand during what was hit-and-miss year on PPV.

The big matches delivered, with Randy Ortons versus Mick Foley in a Hardcore Match and the World Heavyweight Title three-way-day WrestleMania rematch between Shawn Michaels, Chris Benoit and Triple H being the high points.

The pay-per-view itself was bolstered thanks to a hot crowd and a decent build, with effective segments and matches on Raw leading to the supershow. One match that did a particularly good job of building up Backlash was the superb eight-man main event of the April 12th Raw, the PPV go-home show.

Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Mick Foley and Shawn Michaels took on all four members of Evolution in a red-hot 20-minute stunner with a cracking finishing sequence, during which everyone got their moment to shine and future matches were teased.

Really, they could have given them an extra ten or fifteen minutes to really put it over the top, but what we got was a tremendous main event that would have convinced some fans to purchase Backlash.

For what it's worth, Michaels got the win after nailing Randy Orton with some Sweet Chin Music.
