WWE Raw In 2004: 10 Best Moments
5. William Regal & Eugene Win The World Tag Titles In England
William Regal had a pretty torrid time for most of 2003. After receiving a concussion at the No Way Out pay-per-view in February, Regal then contracted a mysterious illness and it was discovered he had an underlying heart condition.
The situation was so serious that he was taken off of WWE television for over a year, only returning on the April 5th, 2004 episode of Raw. And even then, he couldn't wrestle, as he wasn't physically cleared to compete. He acted as Eugene's manager in the meantime.
Eventually, after more tests and training, Regal was ready to return. He'd worked incredibly hard to get to that point and was rewarded with a push from the creative team, as he started teaming with Eugene in pursuit of the World Tag Team Titles.
On the October 11th Raw, Eugene and Regal challenged La Resistance for the belts in Regal's home country of England. The reaction to the Blackpool native was incredible, and seemed to spur Regal on. He hadn't been that fired-up for years and looked like he was having the time of his life as he received Steve Austin-like reactions.
Things got even better as, after just three minutes, the odd couple dropped La Res to become the tag champs. The roof just about blew off of the Manchester Evening News Arena for what was a truly feel-good moment.
Unfortunately, when the show came back from commercial break, the match had been restarted (Regal had used the brass knuckles to win) and this time La Res won to retain their titles, with Regal taking the pin.
Disappointing? Maybe, but the moment when they won the belts was priceless and, besides, they won the things for real just over a month later anyway.
