WWE Royal Rumble 2013: 5 Awesome Moments And 5 That Sucked

And 5 That Sucked...

5. Alberto Del Rio: The Mexican Bret Hart

So apparently when the wrestling news sites reported that Bret Hart would only do the 1,000th episode of Raw if the WWE had something worthwhile for him to do, this is what he meant. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Bret Hart fan and an Alberto Del Rio fan, and as a Mexican, hearing the phrase "Mexican Bret Hart" put a smile on my face. My one gripe with this segment was that it seems like the WWE feels the best way to get their current roster over is to make them seem like the second coming of already established legends. Once in a while, it's okay. When Ric Flair let The Miz put the figure-four leg lock on Antonio Cesaro, it was a pretty cool moment. That is until the next week on Raw when he tried it on Dolph Ziggler and failed miserably. Younger wrestlers are always going to remind fans of older wrestlers. It's a given, especially if these younger guys were influenced by them. Triple H emulated Ric Flair, Chris Benoit emulated Dynamite Kid - and we saw that in their wrestling style and personality. The Miz was clearly influenced by The Rock, and to some extent Chris Jericho, not Ric Flair. Alberto Del Rio's dad and uncle are lucha libre legends, and the fact that Del Rio went by Dos Caras Jr. before signing with the WWE clearly shows who he was modelling himself after. Don't just randomly pair up a legend with a WWE superstar and tell us this is the newer (or ethnic) version of this legend. We fans can draw these parallels ourselves as they develop organically. Next thing you know Michael McGillicutty is going to present Dolph Ziggler with Mr. Perfect's old entrance towel then go sob quietly in the Gorilla Position as Ziggler's star continues to shine.
