WWE SmackDown: 10 Things You Might Have Missed
3. Some Refreshing Match-Making
One of the main problems with WWE nowadays is that authority figures seemingly must be seen to sign off on all major matches. These segments are usually unnecessary; who cares that the Commissioner/General Manager has agreed to sign the match? This sort of thing should happen away from the cameras more often.
In a throwback moment to the way things used to be, Rusev demanded to know who his next competition on SmackDown would be only to be answered by Randy Orton. This was a great way to move Orton out of the WWE Title picture and gives Rusev a decent feud to look forward to in time for SummerSlam. Win-win then.
Wheeling out Shane McMahon or Daniel Bryan to make the match 'official' would have taken away from the intensity of the moment between both wrestlers, so WWE made the right choice by keeping things simple. So slick was the exchange that you probably didn't even notice there was no authority figure to spoil it.
