WWE: Triple H's 5 Best Summerslam Matches

2. HHH vs The Rock - Summerslam 1998

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeOnPxFJAjg This match was a star builder for both Superstars involved. Both HHH and The Rock were in the Midcard at the time, both looking to break through into the Main Event scene. The Rock was the reigning Intercontinental Champion, and despite being a heel, his reaction during and after the match from the Madison Square Garden crowd actually led to a short lived tweener/face run before turning full circle to a bona fide heel at Survivor Series 1998. Despite the positive reaction to The Rock, HHH was as equally well received by the MSG audience, and both men went on to have a match that did not disappoint. The match itself was a Ladder Match, and when reading opinion in retrospect, many feel it was one of the more underrated Ladder matches in WWE history. Shawn Michaels had previously made Ladder matches all about high risks and spectacular uses of the Ladder, however this match deviated from that formula and the Ladder was used more as a weapon for hurting the opponent directly for one of the first times. HHH won the match with the help of Chyna (who got involved after interference from Mark Henry) and became the Intercontinental Champion. The match would be the culmination of the DX/Nation Of Domination feud, and the aftermath saw The Rock propelled to the Main Event as previously noted. HHH suffered a knee injury shortly after this match, however resumed his feud with The Rock upon his return, putting his own name in the Main Event scene for the first time.
