WWE: The Ultimate Warrior's 6 Biggest Controversies
6. Holding WWF Ransom At SummerSlam 1991
The first major faux pas in the career of the Ultimate Warrior came in the build up to Summerslam 1991 where he was to team with Hulk Hogan in the main event against the Triangle of Terror. Allegedly, Warrior threatened to no-show the event unless he received a large amount of money. Versions of the event differ though depending on which side of the story you believe. According to Vince McMahon and the WWE company line, Warrior held them up for more money, knowing that he was an integral advertised part of the scheduled Summerslam event. Some accounts include Hogan and Sgt. Slaughter offering to deal with Warrior physically when they learned of his intentions. Not wanting a real life physical altercation between his employees, McMahon is said to have paid Warrior the money before immediately firing him following the match. Warrior's account of the situation differs however, claiming that he was only asking for money that he had been owed since his WrestleMania 7 match against Randy Savage. It's unclear who was in the right as regards the money but it's obvious that no-showing a major advertised event was not the most grown up decision Warrior could have made. His strong-arm tactics may have got him his money but he made it abundantly clear that he was willing to sacrifice everyone else to get what he wanted. It wouldn't be the last time he would leave the WWE on bad terms.
