The United States Heavyweight Championship quickly replaced the Mid Atlantic Heavyweight championship and the likes of Terry Funk, Paul Jones and Black Jack Mulligan became household names by holding the belt in the late 70s.

Winning the Championship meant you were the leading contender to challenge the travelling NWA Champion.

Not just in terms of the NWA but the wrestling fraternity in general, the old United States Championship was a huge deal. It's a real shame to see what it has become in recent years.
