WWE Wellness Policy - 6 Wrestlers Badly Derailed (And 4 That Prevailed)

4. Prevailed - The Great Khali

The unlikeliest of World Champion, The Great Khali benefited from being huge just by genetics rather than chemicals.

WWE was in desperate need of a 'big' name after a series of unfortunate events befell Smackdown's top tier. And in a company turned upside down by injuries and suspensions, Khali found himself the shocking beneficiary of a Battle Royal victory, scoring his first and (to-date) only World Title.

Exposing that Vince's safety-net solution was still to rely on big lads, the woefully unprepared giant was charming, if completely useless in-ring, leading to several mammoth victories utilising a big boot, big chop, big face grip, or a combination of the three.

These unconventional mixed martial arts took down The Undertaker, Batista, Ric Flair, Rey Mysterio and others, before a defeat to Batista in a Triple Threat match and surprisingly entertaining Punjabi Prison rematch brought to an end his comical time leading the blue brand.

But the story of Khali and the Wellness Programme doesn't end there. During WWE-mandated physical testing in 2012, it was identified that he required surgery to to remove a pituitary gland tumor that was the cause his enormous size. This reduced many of the health risks fellow sufferer Andre the Giant experienced, and further solidified the case for regular physicals for performers in such a demanding environment.
