WWE WrestleMania 15 Fantasy Booking - 9 Matches To Make It Better
9. WWF Tag Team Championship - Owen Hart & Jeff Jarrett (c) vs New Age Outlaws
One of the strangest booking decisions ever at a WrestleMania saw D'Lo Brown and Test team together for the first time in their history to face the Tag Team Champions Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett. How this bizarre curiosity came about was reportedly down to head writer Vince Russo. He came up with the idea of doing a 15-man Battle Royal on the Sunday Night Heat pre-show where the two winners would then have their shot at the tag gold at the PPV. Not the worst idea when the company didn't have a hot tag team feud going on but why he decided the rules would be the two ACTUAL last man standing in the Battle Royal getting the shot at the PPV and not the TEAM that won, was dumbfounding. What it meant was D'Lo and Test, who didn't know each other, ended up being the last two men standing and their team would wrestle together later in the night for the gold. Not established teams like Legion of Doom, the Acolytes, Too Much, Edge and Christian or even newcomers The Hardy Boyz. This was a Russo serve at its finest. It goes without saying the D'Lo & Test vs Jarrett & Owen match bombed. The challengers had no chemistry and the crowd had no real interest in a match that hadn't been built up. Rebooking this one is probably the easiest on the card. Taking Road Dogg and Billy Gunn out of their bizarre multi man singles encounters later in the show (more on that later but it's more Russo swerving, i.e. - illogical booking) allows us to use the New Age Outlaws in a way they should be utilised, as a team. The hottest tag team of 99 then can challenge for the gold in a match that would actually take place in real life at the next PPV Backlash in what was a good, solid encounter. Owen Hart & Jeff Jarrett vs The New Age Outlaws then could be a fun six minutes that would see the tag champions retain (only for the Outlaws to win the gold at the next PPV). Four solid workers opening the WrestleMania PPV with a fun match.
