WWE WrestleMania 29: Why It Matters And What It Means For The Future
(World Heavyweight Champion) Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger
I want to start with a match that illustrates, to me, the greatest potential for where the WWE could be headed in the coming year. Both wrestlers are pretty much new blood when it comes to the history of the industry. However, and this is a big departure from the status quo from the past few years, both athletes have completely unique and dynamic personas that stand out and make them easily recognizable individuals in the minds of the fans. This could simply be enough; achieving some three-dimensional standing in the WWE universe is a rare achievement in a land where most performers have become nothing more than a body, a name, and a goofy costume. But Del Rio and Swagger have even more to offer. They are both battle tested, and have put on some amazing matches against some of the WWEs real competition. Whats more is that they have even managed to survive the seemingly endless onslaught of bad angles and horrible competitors that WWE brass has not-so-graciously kept sending their way -- which may go double for Del Rio after putting up with that gawd awful train-wreck that was his crapfest of a program between him and the Big Show. Take their talent, history, and personalities, throw in the World Heavyweight Championship up for grabs, and the winner is clearly the fans; provided the powers-that-be dont book some stupid swerve or run-in or defamation of the recently deceased. Which would normally be in the cards, but this is Wrestlemania damn-it -- and I want a clean finish.
