Rhea Ripley vs. Iyo Sky to be a WrestleMania 42 main event?

Following recent reports that Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes III is now not in the works for WrestleMania 42, there's now somewhat of an update on what WWE may do for one of its big women's matches when this year's Showcase of the Immortals rolls around.

From the latest episode of Self Made Pro's Self Made Sessions, there have been internal discussions about having Rhea Ripley vs. Iyo Sky take place at 'Mania 42. It was noted that this is far from set in stone and that there are "no guarantees", but Rhea and Iyo have been talked about as a one-on-one bout that could headline one of WrestleMania 42's two nights.

Of course, as it stands, Ripley and Sky - or Rhiyo - are the current WWE Women's Tag Team Champions, having defeated the Kabuki Warriors on last week's Raw; a broadcast that celebrated WWE's one-year anniversary on Netflix. Should WWE opt to go the Ripley vs. Sky route for WrestleMania 42, there's plenty of time to get to that match, be it for one of the pair to turn on the other, the match simply coming together out of mutual respect, or even set up via the Royal Rumble or Elimination Chamber. And if the contest were to take place in a main event spot, you'd have to imagine one of the top women's titles - likely the WWE Women's World Championship, nowadays held by Stephanie Vaquer - would be on the line.

Again, though, this is far from a lock right now, and merely a case of WWE having discussed the Eradicator and the Genius of the Sky as a potential match for WrestleMania 42. As has been talked up on WWE heavily in recent times, Rhea Ripley has never actually defeated Iyo Sky - in televised matches, at least - including Iyo emerging victorious over Rhea and Bianca Belair at WrestleMania 41 in an excellent triple-threat, Sky defeating Ripley to win the Women's World Title on Raw one month before 'Mania 41, Iyo Sky pinning Rhea Ripley to win Charlotte Flair's NXT Women's Title in another triple-threat back at NXT TakeOver: In Your House 2020, Sky retaining that NXT Women's Title against Ripley later in 2020, and even dating back to the 2018 Mae Young Classic, where Iyo beat Rhea in the tournament's semi-finals.
