At the start of the year no one would have believed that The Miz would prove to be one of the most important champions in the WWE today but he is now indispensable as Intercontinental Champion.

Doing the best work of his career as a smarmy heel alongside his wife Maryse, The Miz has shown exactly what the mid-card title belts should be all about: creating compelling stories outside of the main event spotlight so that the card is well-rounded as opposed to being top-heavy. With the SmackDown main-event scene being set ablaze by Styles, Ambrose, and Cena, it's hard to imagine how The Miz gained the traction that he did.

Starting his title reign strong with a MOTY candidate against what people deemed to be three superior wrestlers in Zayn, Owens, and Cesaro, The Miz also faced his fair share of duds including Darren Young and Apollo Crews. Not discouraged, The Miz used Talking Smack to grab the attention he believed he deserved, ultimately bringing attention to the shiny belt over his shoulder. Soon wrestlers were putting their careers on the line to get at the IC Title, and this was all down to The Miz who raised the belt back to the level of prestige it hasn't seen for years.
