WWE's Timeless D-Generation X Theme Was Originally Written For THIS Wrestler

Jim Johnston says the DX theme was intended for one WWE star, not an entire faction.

Former WWE music producer Jim Johnston has revealed that the classic D-Generation X theme was originally written for Shawn Michaels, not a full faction.

Johnston told the RRGB podcast that he sat down to pen the track as a new solo hit for HBK. Then, by the time he'd finished, Shawn had linked up with Triple H, Chyna and Rick Rude to form the rebellious group that'd go on to redefine WWF television.

It's amazing to think that the familiar "Are You Ready?" refrain was supposed to replace Michaels' timeless 'Sexy Boy' song, but it's true. The company wanted to shake up his presentation anyway, and the tune that'd eventually become a DX fave was already completed when the stable was suddenly born onscreen.

Shawn was going to use it solo.

Johnston also said that the theme was a total departure from anything else he'd ever written, and he wasn't initially sure that Vince McMahon would like the end result. Thankfully, Vince did, and he actually gave it the green light for Michaels pre-DX.

Things fell into place though, because the track was deemed perfect for the company's new degenerate bunch.
