Before getting into wrestling Mero had a strong background in boxing. He was New York Golden Gloves champion three years in a row. He had wanted to turn professional but his ambitions were curtailed due to a nose injury.

Mero spent five years in WCW under the name Johnny B Badd, a flashy Little Richard look-alike, before switching companies. When in WWE he would eventually be known as Marvelous Marc Mero with a gimmick that alluded to his boxing past.

Having initially been beaten in the first round, he was allowed to progress due to Steve Blackman getting injured. He was then defeated by Bradshaw in the second round. Mero left WWE a year later and took time away from wrestling, to recover from shoulder surgery and other injuries. In 2004 he returned as Johnny B Badd in TNA. He retired from the ring in 2006.

Since retiring from wrestling Mero spends most of his time as a motivational and anti-bullying speaker, for kids and teens. A practicing Christian, he has also, recently, been a guest on a church's live stream during the Covid-19 lockdown.
