9 Upcoming Movies That Could Be Franchise Killers
2. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Tom Cruise seems to be franchise hungry right now; he’s got the Mission: Impossible series, of course, Top Gun 2 keeps threatening to happen, Edge Of Tomorrow 2 has been confirmed and that weird reboot of The Mummy should provide him with a sequel or two.
All of which brings us to Never Go Back, the sequel to 2013’s Jack Reacher. While Reacher was a decent thriller it still kind of felt like a large budget ITV detective drama, and despite Cruise’s best attempts at bringing the character to life the whole thing just felt a little off somehow. The disappointing grosses appeared to kill any franchise hopes, but the studio obviously felt another entry was worth the risk.
The story will find Reacher framed for murder, learning he possibly has a teenage child and having to deal with enemies from the past. If Never Go Back is anything like the original it will be a solid piece of work, but also instantly forgettable; if that’s the case, it’s unlikely to score another instalment beyond that.
