9 Upcoming Movies That Could Be Franchise Killers
3. Ghostbusters
There hasn’t been a new Ghostbusters movie since 1989, mainly because Bill Murray wouldn’t touch the series with a very long pole. The idea of a third movie still lingered for years afterwards, though, but when Harold Ramis passed away it felt like the series would be quietly consigned to history out of respect; no such luck, sadly.
Some genius in Sony got the brainwave to reboot the series, hand it to Paul Feig and see what he could do. If the trailer – and early screening reports – are anything to go by this is franchise killing material on the same scale as Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four, and Sony is reportedly very worried about it.
The trailer is devoid of any decent laughs or scares, the new team lacks the chemistry of the original group and if it’s supposed to get people excited for a new version of Ghostbusters, it’s failing in the most profound way possible. Closer to the release date expect a new trailer pimping the cameos by Murray, Sigourney Weaver and rest of the original cast; because nostalgia is the only marketing angle the reboot has to play at this stage.
