9 Upcoming Movies That Could Be Franchise Killers

1. Alice Through The Looking Glass

From a purely economic point of view this movie makes sense; despite being critically reviled, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland made an avalanche of money, so a sequel – even a slightly belated one – should also be a large hit. The second movie is missing a few key elements, though; no Tim Burton directing, the 3-D gimmick that helped pad the gross of the original has stalled and the love affair between moviegoers and Johnny Depp has thoroughly fizzled out.

What’s left is another ugly romp through Burton’s reimagined Wonderland, and if anybody is excited about another go around they’ve kept it quiet. The trailer makes it look like a victory lap of the original, and new characters like Sacha Baron Cohen’s villainous Time fail to add much excitement to events; and really, who’s rushing out to see a Sacha Baron Cohen movie nowadays?

The only bright spot is the film is being directed by James Bobin, director of Flight Of The Concords and The Muppets, so maybe some of his past magic will rub off on what feels like the ultimate corporate sequel.

Do you think any of these sequels will keep their franchises going a little bit longer? Or are they doomed? Share your thoughts down in the comments.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
