Every WCW Ladder Match Ranked - From Worst To Best

3. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Syxx - Souled Out

Coming a decade after the first ladder match in World Championship Wrestling history, this is the sort of match that you expect to see under a list of ladder matches on paper. Heck, looking back at the WCW history of ladder matches leads one to a feeling mostly of regret. Instead of Goldberg vs. Scott Hall and endless 3 Count vs. Jung Dragons matches we should have had Jericho vs. Saturn, Ultimo Dragon vs. Dean Malenko, Benoit vs. Raven.

Saying that, and this feels somewhat strange to say, but the real star of this match is Nick Patrick. The WCW referee was fully into his crooked-ref gimmick at the time, and was arguably the most entertaining part of the New World Order. Guerrero and Syxx put on a damn fine show, but it is Patrick's mannerisms that really bring this home for me.

Eddie wins the match and the Cruiserweight Championship after a struggle with the belt at the top of the ladder, and you can almost see Nick Patrick's heart break.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
