10 Amazing Comic Book Covers DC Wants You To Remember

8. Green Lantern Green Arrow #85

Man Of Steel 1 Variant Cover
DC Comics

When you are looking through lists online of comic book covers thought to be too controversial, the one that often tops the list is Neal Adams' Green Lantern/Green Arrow #85. Not only was this an important and controversial cover, it was also an amazing story.

The story within titled, Snowbirds Don't Fly, revolved around Roy Harper, otherwise known as Speedy, Green Arrow's sidekick. Green Lantern and Green arrow tracked down some junkies only to find Speedy was one of them.

He attempted to shoot heroin, which was a big deal back in 1971 when comics weren't often depicting drug use or anything that would normally be banned by the Comics Code of Authority.

The cover image perfectly summed up the content of the issue. Adams' beautifully illustrated cover shows the shock and anger Green Arrow felt in the moment he learned his sidekick was a drug user. The shame on Speedy's face speaks volumes and while this was a controversial cover, it remains one of the most important books DC published related to the ongoing issue of drug abuse in the United States during the 1970s.
