10 Amazing Comic Book Covers DC Wants You To Remember
9. The Man Of Steel #1
When DC decided to fix up their Multiverse problem, they launched a crossover event called The Crisis on Infinite Earths. This resulted in the removal of the many versions of Earth and numerous changes to their lineup of characters. The event effectively separated the DC universe into a Pre-Crisis era and a Post-Crisis era.
The Man of Steel was the first major release in the Post-Crisis continuity, which made it an important book. It stands as one of the most important Superman comics of all time due to the reimagining/rebooting of Superman's origin story by writer/artist John Byrne.
Byrne illustrated two versions for the cover of the first issue. The original showed Clark Kent opening his shirt to reveal the "S" logo on the right side while Krypton was exploding as his rocket shot out into space on the left. It's an important cover, but the variant he drew was far more profound.
The variant cover showed a closeup of Superman's chest with his logo taking up a large portion of the page. It was a direct, in-your-face showing of Superman and is, by far, one of the best Superman covers of all time.
