10 Astonishing Facts About Kryptonite

8. A Kryptonite Asteroid Nearly Destroyed The Earth

Superman Kryptonite
DC Comics

When Lex Luthor was the US President, the Pentagon alerted him than an asteroid the size of Brazil was on a collision course with Earth. Normally, Superman would be sent into space and give the asteroid a good thumping.

Sadly, this plan wouldn't work since the entire asteroid was made of Kryptonite, rendering Superman incapable of stopping it. President Luthor blamed the Man of Steel for the asteroid, claiming it was homing onto him because he is a Kryptonian.

Anyway, Luthor puts a bounty on Superman, which causes every supervillain under the Sun (and several superheroes) to try to hunt down Kal-El, believing that killing him or getting him off the planet will stop the asteroid’s destructive path.

Obviously there was only one solution to obliterate the asteroid. A kid built a Godzilla-sized Batman/Superman composite robot, had a superhero called Captain Atom fly it into space, and made it punch the asteroid to pieces. I mean, that seems like the most sensible way to fix any problem.
