Dakota North first appeared in her own self-titled comic in February 1986 and was created by Martha Thomases and Tony Salmons. She was the daughter of CIA agent Samuel J. North and began her career as a freelance private investigator at a fairly young age. She was very successful, at one time supporting four branch offices across the world.

One of her early cases was when she was hired by a coalition of models to track down the identity of a serial killer who had been murdering fashion models. She was guarding models Elyse Nelson and Mary Jane Watson. She met Spider-Man while on the case and they discovered that Nelson was the killer and saved Watson’s life. She was next hired by young Power Pack member Jack Power to clear the name of his favorite author of theft, which she did with the help of the Punisher.

Recommended by her friend, Jessica Jones, Dakota began working for the law firm of Nelson and Murdock. First, she investigated who was running around as Daredevil while Matthew Murdock was in prison with the help of Ben Urich. She then aided them in investigating a series of murders conducted by the Gladiator and Murdock’s blind wife Milla who were both being manipulated by Matt’s old foe, Mr. Fear.
