10 Best Comic Book Universes

8. Image Universe

Image Comics

Image Comics began in 1992 when a group of artists/writers left Marvel Comics to form a studio where they could remain in control of their intellectual properties. Since the debut of Youngblood #1, the Image Universe grew to an ever-expanding group of characters who shared universes, and sometimes interacted.

The Image Universe primarily consists of characters from Spawn, the Savage Dragon, Witchblade, Youngblood, and Invincible, but it could be argued that the universe shares some dimensional similarities to The Walking Dead and every other book published at Image Comics prior to the Shattered Image crossover that split Wildstorm from the main continuity.

Shattered Image did separate Wildstorm into a separate universe, but it also created a viable Image Multiverse, which is something that had previously been more of a Marvel and DC Comics sort of thing.

When crossovers occur, they are considered to happen in each universe simultaneously, which makes for a rather confusing explanation of how the Image Universe is structured. Essentially, each character exists within their own universe until they interact with another character, leading to a mirroring of events in each universe. This allows for creators to do whatever they want in their own characters' universe but also allows for crossovers without blowing their continuity all to hell.
