10 Best New DC Characters Of The 21st Century
3. Superboy (Jon Kent)
Originally appearing in the Convergence storyline in 2015, it was not until a whole year later that Jonathan Samuel Kent became a staple to the Superman mythos with the Rebirth relaunch. At once, the 10 year old Jon Kent enamoured many readers with his childish sensibilities and expertly designed costume. The costume, which consisted of sneakers, ripped jeans and a zip jacket with the S-Shield, fully reflected Jon's naivety, while also giving him a casual coolness.
It would be unfair to base Jon's popularity and greatness on his costume alone (as great as it is). Due credit needs to be given to veteran Superman writer Dan Jurgens (for his inception), as well as Peter J. Tomasi's writing during his runs on Superman and Super-Sons. Jon is one of the few children in comic books that feel and speak in a genuine manner. While many children are presented as overly juvenile and overly simplified, Jon is painted with the upmost sincerity, questioning the world around him and trying to understand his place within it.
His relationship with his parents is only outdone by his friendship with Damian Wayne. Damian is essentially the antithesis of Jon, but their mutual desire for friendship and companionship in their unconventional lives wills them together. Through the good times and their moments of friction, the two junior vigilantes endure, and their place in the pantheon of heroes with it.
