10 Changes That Totally Ruined Comic Book Characters

9. The Scarlet Witch

The Scarlet Witch began her career as a villain of sorts, as part of Magneto€™s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants beside her twin brother, Quicksilver. In an effort to redeem themselves for their past crimes, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff successfully petitioned for membership in the Avengers. And while Quicksilver would serve intermittently with the team over the decades, Wanda would prove to be a key member of the team, almost equal in importance to the Avengers as Captain America, Thor, or Iron Man. Wanda went through a lot of character growth over those years. She fell in love with and married one of her teammates, the synthetic Vision, and also used her mutant hex power as a stepping stone to become a powerful adept at magic. Her powers even enabled her and the Vision to have twin boys. But then John Byrne came along in the 80s and decided to undo all that. The Vision is dismantled and rebuilt as an emotionless robot, and Wanda discovers that their children were actually fragments of Mephisto€™s soul, which he later absorbed back into himself, ending their existence and nearly driving Wanda insane. Years later, Brian Michael Bendis decided to pick up the torch from this and actually drove her insane. Despite years of development dealing with her coping with the loss of her children, all that was ignored and Wanda became a supervillain, killing several of her fellow Avengers then later committing genocide by decimating the mutant population. Allan Heinberg€™s recent mini-series, Avengers: The Children€™s Crusade, made an attempt to clear up a lot of this bizarre behavior, but unfortunately a lot of damage has already been done.
