10 Comics That Took Their Characters To New Heights In 2017

The super-slam hit of 2017 that’s topped many a ‘Best Comics of the Year’ chart also happens to have transformed a previously watered-down character into a veritable top-shelf draw in his own right.

Mister Miracle earned a 12-issue series revival beginning in August 2017, the same month DC celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jack Kirby - it seems no coincidence they picked one of the New Gods to pay tribute to a comic god of old.

Aforementioned writer King and artist Mitch Gerads teamed up to critical acclaim on 2015’s Sheriff of Babylon and were given the reins to tell the latest Scott Free tale, which will continue to run in 2018.

What that pair did with one of Kirby’s more understated creations has thus far been nothing short of masterful; the tone is set when our Mister Miracle, a.k.a. Scott Free, attempts to take his own life on the first page of issue one.

Full disclosure, the series doesn’t let up on your emotions from that point.

Accompanied by fellow Apokolips survivor, wife and super-companion Big Barda, master escape artist Mister Miracle wrangles his way through a relentless minefield of mental struggles.

Perhaps that’s why Mister Miracle had and is continuing to have such an impact. Scott Free possesses literal god powers and has proved one of the DC universe’s most powerful heroes at times in his publication, but it's the war against inner demons that drives the most compelling arc of 2017.
