10 DC Characters Derived From Ancient Myth

1. Zeus

Shazam DC Rebirth
DC Comics

King of the Greek gods known for hurling thunder bolts in ire, and getting up to many an unconventional amorous activity, transforming into various animals to have sex with unsuspecting women. Zeus is the product of a vast expanse of Greek mythology, including strange stories like this, and many more epic and grand.

In the most modern version of Wonder Woman Zeus and Hippolyta are Diana’s parents. Sourcing the original mythology, Zeus and Hippolyta are relatives, he being the father of Ares, and Ares the father of Hippolyta. Familial romance of this kind is by no means unusual for the Greek gods; Zeus’ wife Hera (mother to Ares) is also his sister.

Zeus has appeared numerous times in DC’s modern stories, either in reference to Wonder Woman and her lore, or directly as an embodied character. He shows up in the recent New 52 comics, and makes his first appearance in 1944’s Superman #28.
