10 DCEU Characters That Are Nothing Like The Comics

6. Alfred Pennyworth

Alfred Pennyworth (Jeremy Irons) has always been Bruce Wayne's trusty confidante and one constant tether to the outside world. Generally speaking, the comics haven't ever veered too far from depicting him as the sharply-dressed, well-spoken, endlessly suffering butler fans largely know him as.

Jeremy Irons' performance as the DCEU's Alfred is really quite different from what fans may have been expecting, then, with him proving far more stern and assertive during his conversations with Bruce.

Michael Caine's Alfred from the Dark Knight saga was no slouch, but it was also tough to avoid the feeling that he was still, at the end of the day, an employee as much as he was a family member.

The DCEU Alfred feels on a more even keel with Bruce, fully unafraid to admonish him with a severe tone, and largely lacking the cheeky humour that defined Caine's beloved take - or his typical conception in the comics.

Irons' Alfred is certainly a solid riff on the character, if quite a divergence from most of the iconography and stereotypes fans associate with Batman's trusty aide.

It's a shame Irons never really had sufficient time to flesh the character out - assuming he isn't returning for The Batman, of course - because he's one of the few Snyder revisions who worked out pretty damn well.
