Warren Ellis is one of the modern era's greatest writers, and his time spent on Iron Man is no exception. The story is designed to be a jumping on point for readers and updates the character's history to reflect the world at the time. Many of these elements were translated into the first Iron Man film, and the plot of Iron Man 3 is partially adapted from this story.

For years, the main reason to read an Iron Man comics was essentially to see what kind of suit Tony would wear and how he would use it against an enemy. This is the arc that switches the focus from the suits to the character that has become so popular.

A new nanotechnology called Extremis is used by a group of terrorists that enable them to brutally defeat Iron Man and make him obsolete. Tony updates both himself and his armor in order to overcome the new challenges put in front of him.

This is the run that literally tore down Iron Man and rebuilt him into the character we know today. With an updated origin story and a fan-favorite armor introduced, this still stands as the best Iron Man story in recent years.
