2. Fantastic Four By Mark Waid And Mike Wieringo

Justice League The Final Night
Marvel Comics

The Fantastic Four run of writer Mark Waid and late artist Mike Wieringo ran for 35 issues. From the beginning, Waid played down the idea that the FF were superheroes. They were explorers, astronauts, and most of all, a family. Reed explained to baby Valeria why he choose the “ridiculous” name of Mr. Fantastic and turned his family into world-famous celebrities. He told his baby that maybe by making them rich and famous and keeping them from being seen as freaks, he could maybe one day be forgiven for robbing them of a normal life because of his mistake during the rocket trip that changed their lives.

The run brought the Fantastic Four down to one of its lowest points. In “Unthinkable”, Dr. Doom killed his only love to make new armor from her skin. Using sorcery, Doom sent Franklin Richards to Hell, captured baby Valeria, and tortured the team. Reed invaded Latveria where the Thing became possessed and Richards was forced to kill him.

The remaining three invaded Heaven itself to get Ben back and met the Creator, who healed Reed’s damaged face and sent them back to Earth. The run ended with “Tag”, where the team’s powers were randomly jumping into various New Yorkers and the FF had to hunt them down to get these abilities back. Reed tried to save Ben from becoming The Thing again, but Grimm refused to let his friend, or anyone, take on that burden.
