10 Insultingly Dumb Superman Comic Storylines
8. Superman Fights A Sphinx - Action Comics #240 (1958)
After Lois Lane deduces Clark Kent's secret identity, Superman worries she'll reveal it to the newspapers. The next day, a sphinx appears in Earth's orbit and begins melting mountaintops with its x-ray beams. When Superman flies up to investigate, he sees the sphinx has his face! It then blasts Supes with Kryptonite lasers, knocking him down to Earth.
When Superman heads back up to space to investigate this creature, Clark Kent arrives in The Daily Planet. Lois assumes that Clark is a robot duplicate and so, tugs at his skin and hair to pull off his metal shell. When she realises that he's not an android, Lois admits she was wrong about Superman's identity.
But since we know the pair are one and the same, what the heck is happening? Well, when Superman learned that Lois was onto him, he constructed a flying sphinx in his image that could shoot fake Kryptonite rays. He then sent it into space and sent his robot duplicate to fight it while Superman went to The Daily Planet as Clark Kent.
There has got to be an easier way to maintain your secret identity than building Egyptian structures and robots before hurling them into space.
