10 Landmark Lawsuits That Changed Comics Forever

9. Tony Moore Sued To Get His Walking Dead Creator Rights

What it was: Robert Kirkman is a prolific comic book writer best known as the creator of The Walking Dead. And he's known for that because the TV adaptation of that book is so incredibly popular, and because he often makes out like he is the soul creator of the source material (alongside Charlie Adlard, who drew most of the 150-or-so issues so far). In fact, Kirkman had help from artist Tony Moore for the first six issues of the comic €“ and Moore thinks that the writer conned him out of royalties for his part in starting The Walking Dead up. Because, well, it's generated a lot of money for Kirkman since then, and he's not exactly been eager to share it. Which is why Moore decided to sue him, and Kirkman sued back. What it changed: Moore and Kirkman released a joint statement saying they'd reached a settlement €œto everyone's mutual satisfaction.€ Which means that, presumably, along with already having his name on the opening credits of The Walking Dead TV show, Moore presumably got some financial compensation along with it.
