If you're a fan of either Marvel or DC, you'll probably be familiar with the fact both publishers boast an inordinate amount of ape-based heroes and villains. DC more famously has Gorilla City, which is where Flash villain Gorilla Grodd hails from, as well as Ultra-Humanite, who was actually Superman's first ever antagonist.

Oh, and there's Monsieur Mallah too, just for good measure.

Soon enough, DC found themselves stamping down on their ape-based madness during the Silver Age of comics. DC Editor Julius Schwartz even claimed that, while comics with gorillas appearing were outselling the competition, editor Irwin Donenfeld called him in to limit the publisher to one gorilla per month.

Comics have had a lot of kooky obsessions over the years, but never to the point where they've had to self-regulate the amount of times a given trope could appear on their covers. Who knows when the next primate-esque trend may hit?
