5. Mongul

Mongul was the despotic ruler of an alien race until he was overthrown by a revolution and exiled. The alien warlord then set his sights on Earth and the Man of Steel.

Kidnapping Lois and Jimmy, Mongul forced Superman to help him activate a planet-sized battle station called Warworld. Superman was able to save his friends and destroy Warworld though, earning Mongul's undying hatred.

Much like Darkseid, Mongul is super-strong and nearly invulnerable, meaning that even Superman struggles to beat him in a fight. He also has limited telepathy, telekinesis and can fire energy blasts.

Mongul was the villain in the seminal Superman story For the Man Who Has Everything. In the story, Mongul used an alien plant called the Black Mercy to trap Superman in a dream where he lived on Krypton with a wife and child.

After Crisis on Infinite Earths, Mongul was re-imagined as the ruler of a planet called Warworld who captured aliens to take part in gladiatorial games. Mongul captured Superman and forced him to compete, but the Man of Steel was able to escape and led an uprising that kicked Mongul off the planet.

As revenge, Mongul tried to turn Earth into a new Warworld. He was stopped, but not before destroying Green Lantern's home Coast City and killing everyone there.

I was just a mild-mannered NCTJ accredited journalist until one day I found out the truth... that I could share my nerdy ramblings with people on the internet! It's just like mumbling to myself on the train, but without all the strange looks.
