The symbiotes, also known as the Klyntar, weren't actually all that bad to begin with. In fact, they were actually quite benevolent, and looked for a way to branch out and protect the universe from the threats that perturbed it, founding the Agents of the Cosmos in the process.

As was the case with the symbiote that bonded to Peter Parker however, they could also be twisted, and indeed, the suit that bonded with Pete was originally an outcast from the Klyntar Empire. Said empire would then be taken over by these evil beings, who would then bond to hosts not to protect the galaxy, but for their own personal sustenance; a parasitic relationship would thus be formed, and hosts - in most cases - would die.

Venom was originally selected to be an Agent of the Cosmos, but the host he bonded with turned out to be something of a bad egg, and used the suit to lay waste to his planet. Venom was then corrupted, and exiled from the symbiote hive mind, only to be awakened by Peter Parker during the events of Secret Wars.

And there you have it, really. The cosmic origins of the suit are always interesting to explore (and in that respect, a read of Brian Bendis' Guardians of the Galaxy is encouraged), seeing as how we very rarely get to see that side of the character, and the pay-off is certainly worth it.
