After a group of incompetent superheroes called the New Warriors caused a school to blow up, the American Congress put forward a law that forced all superbeings to work with the US government.

Some superheroes like Iron Man and Wasp saw this decision as a necessary evil while others like Captain America and Luke Cage viewed this registration act as an insult to freedom. Unsurprisingly, this law split heroes right down the middle and the Fantastic Four were no exception.

Even though Iron Man was arresting his former teammates for refusing to accept the registration act, Reed Richards allied with him, believing it was the best way to avoid casualties. When the anti-registration side attacked Iron Man's team, Reed unleashed his secret weapon - a clone of Thor.

Unfortunately, the clone was unstable and used lethal force on the Avengers, resulting in the death of Goliath.

The rest of the Fantastic Four believe this moment irrefutably proved Reed was fighting on the wrong side. Sue was so disgusted by Reed's actions, she left him. Ben became so disillusioned by how the new law split the country in half, he moved to France.
