10 Popular Comics Characters Imported From Other Media

7. Renee Montoya

DC Comics

First appearance: Harley Quinn is far from the only character created for Batman: The Animated Series to become a fan favourite fixture in other versions of the Dark Knight's world. Hispanic detective Renee Montoya was introduced for the show in order to have a greater cast of Gotham City Police Department cops (and add a bit of diversity too) and served as the TV animation's partner for rough, grumpy (although not as corrupt as in some versions) Harvey Bullock.

In comics: Because DC were keen to back the show, they introduced Renee into the comics while it was still being produced, meaning that her first appearance on the page (in Batman #475 in 1992) came before the Animated Series had begun airing.

Over the years, she developed a complex life and character of her own in the comics, being outed as a lesbian by Two-Face, quitting the police and developing a drinking problem, dating Batwoman (Kate Kane) and assuming the mantle of faceless vigilante The Question. After the New 52 reboot, she was reintroduced a couple of months ago in Detective Comics #41, once more as Bullock's new partner.

And back again?: A similar hard-edged hispanic detective, Anna Ramirez, appeared in The Dark Knight but wasn't named Montoya because she was revealed to be corrupt and complicit in Harvey Dent's kidnapping. A live action Renee does appear, however, as an anti-corruption detective and romantic rival to Jim Gordon in Fox's Gotham.
